A workshop in college where we had to design a product based on ‘Design for a Better Tomorrow’.
The guiding principles of this was to seek out design that goes beyond the mere mastery of shape, form and function, and provide a solution to overcome life's current – and future – challenges.

“Organic Farming” combats some of the causes of climate change.

  • The first step would be introducing organic farming at home, as it eliminates use of pesticides, fertilizers, etc.

  • The fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients and improves cardiac health and immune system response, decreases heart rate and stress, improves fine and gross motor skills, flexibility and body strength.

  • So many people feel that gardening is their therapy. It improves mental health – fresh air and exercise, away from the daily stresses of work, expressing our creativity, a sense of accomplishment. Qutab, M. (2017).

  • Having your children assist you increases the chance that they will eat more of the fruits and vegetables they have helped to grow

  • Will save money at the grocery store

  • Recycle produce peels and waste to make your own compost. Dore, J. (2011).

People living in Urban areas (in India) need to practice growing feasible herbs and vegetables at home due to increased health risks from excessive use of pesticides, fertilisers, insecticides etc in traditional farming.

Using Arduino UNO as the micro-controller, 2 sensors - soil moisture and light sensors were programmed along with 2 LEDs - green and red.
When the red light glows, the app will tell you what the plant needs/requires. (either water, sunlight etc) And when these needs are fulfilled the light turns green.

The first step taken towards Organic Farming would be growing plants in our own homes. This process is automated, with the help of our Arduino friend.

Each step towards a greater future starts from us. Taking responsibility and spreading awareness even in the smallest way could do wonders. Our step was by this small little prototype developed just under a week of effort.
